Typically, a client hires me to help with either their interior design or organizing issues, not both. But almost every home I have seen during an initial design consultation first needs to be decluttered. Things tend to pile up in our spaces unless we are regularly weeding, and this unused and unloved stuff can obscure the features of our homes that we really love. If you feel that your home needs a new look, the first step should be to take a critical look at what you own. What are you using on a regular basis, and what has outlived its usefulness? What things make you smile and what are just taking up space? Try removing all clutter, tchotchkes, and accessories, even the art from the walls. You might discover a beautiful dining table that you want to keep clean, or a dated and dirty lounge chair that really needs replacing.
