How to Decorate Without Creating Clutter

I work as both a professional organizer and interior designer, and I am passionate about both aspects of my business. But there are times when it feels like I am preaching two competing messages – one is about paring down and the other is often about purchasing new stuff. Is it possible to strike a balance between creating a beautiful space and not getting caught up in consumerism? I think so, and here’s how to do it:

1. Ignore the trends – Every month retailers change up their home décor offerings to reflect the current “hot” items. Last month it was nautical navy-and-white, and this month it’s rose gold glam. It can be so tempting to pick up the latest thing simply because it’s something different. But take a step back and ask yourself if the latest trend is something you really love. Will you enjoy it a year from now, or be regretful about those shiny pink lamps in your living room?

2. Use things that have meaning – I believe your home should be a reflection of your personal taste and history, so surround yourself with things that make you happy even if they don't "match". Family photos, heirloom dishes, grandma’s sideboard, or even just your favorite color will create a space that feels like your home, and not a page in a catalog.

3. Hold out for the good stuff – This might mean you have some blank walls and empty spaces as you find things that speak to you. That is ok! Take your time and invest in items that you will enjoy not just today, but for years to come.
