When I speak to new clients about getting organized there is one thing I hear over and over: I don’t know where to start. I get it – sorting through years of clutter can be overwhelming. But the truth is you can start anywhere. That being said, here are some ideas to help you get going: 1. Start with the place that annoys you the most – There is probably a spot in your home where clutter really interferes with your daily living. Maybe it’s your entryway, where you trip over a pile of shoes every time you come home. Maybe it's the kitchen counter piled with mail that makes you cringe every time you see it. Or maybe it’s that junk drawer where you never can find what you are looking for. Tackling the most annoying place in your home feels great because it makes your life a little bit easier. 2. Start with the easiest place – Beginning in an easy spot where you can see immediate results is very motivating. Pick a small area, like one dresser drawer or one kitchen cabinet. Take everything out, remove the things that are not adding value, and put back what is left neatly. Then pat yourself on the back for a job well done! 3. Start with the most difficult place – If you have a really big job ahead of you, such as a packed basement or garage, it can be tough getting motivated to start. But making even a little progress there will change your mindset from “I need to start cleaning out the basement” to “I am cleaning out the basement”. If it feels like too much, set a timer and resolve to work for just 30 minutes. You’ll probably get more accomplished than you anticipated!
