The days are getting longer and the temperatures are starting to climb here in Central New York, so that means it’s time to set up your outdoor space! Whether you have a big yard or a small deck, a little preplanning can help you create a space that is both functional and stylish. Here are some questions that will help you make a perfect outdoor retreat: 1. What do you want to do there? Always start with function first. Do you plan to grill, eat meals, or have friends over for cocktails? Do your kids need an area to play? Take into account all the activities you want to do and then assign zones of your space to each one. 2. How many people do you need to accommodate? This is important to consider before you purchase furniture. Think about how many seats you will use on a daily basis and also what you will need when entertaining. If you only have groups over occasionally, you can probably get by with some extra folding chairs to supplement your primary seating. 3. What time of day will you be using it? If your outdoor area will be used mostly during the day, provide cover from the sun to make it more comfortable. Umbrellas are the easiest to set up, but a pergola covers a larger area and makes your space feel like an outdoor room. If you plan to use the space primarily in the evenings, add lighting and maybe a fire pit to make it more inviting. 4. What mood do you want to set? This is the fun part, and with so many options available in every price range you can create an outdoor space that fits your personality! Go with bright colors for a fun and casual vibe, subdued neutrals for a sophisticated look, or shop secondhand stores if you want a to set a vintage mood. Our time to enjoy the outdoors is limited here in CNY, so why not try something unexpected?
