The One Idea That Will Motivate You to Organize

One of the most challenging aspects of organizing your home and decluttering is finding the motivation to do the work. Cleaning out the basement may be my idea of a good time, but I understand it's not what most people enjoy doing. When I meet clients who struggle with the task of decluttering, I ask them this question:

What do you want to be doing in your home that you don’t have space for?

Focusing your attention on something you want to add to your life, rather than on all the things you are getting rid of, can frame decluttering in a positive way and help keep you on task.

As 2017 is ending, take some time to think about what you want to bring into your life next year, like a new hobby or a good habit. Write down those goals and then look around your home. Are the things you own holding you back from achieving them? For example, have you put off trying that hobby because you don’t have a workspace or room to store the supplies? Do you avoid exercise because you haven’t cleared out the spare bedroom to set up a home gym? Do you eat a lot of convenience foods because your kitchen is too cluttered to cook in?

Letting go of the objects that no longer serve you will help free up space for something you will really enjoy. Staying focused on what you want to bring into your life – and not what you are discarding – may be the just push you need to get organized in 2018.
