Home Maintenance Reminders for Daylight Savings Time

This Sunday, we will set our clocks one hour ahead to begin Daylight Savings Time. That extra hour of light in the evening makes the day seem so much longer and lets us know spring is fast approaching! Since the time change happens twice per year, it is a great reminder to do those important home maintenance tasks that only need to be addressed occasionally. Here’s a list to get you thinking:

1. Replace batteries in all smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.

2. Flip or turn mattresses.

3. Change the filters in your heating/air conditioning unit, vacuum, and water pitcher.

4. Schedule routine inspections for heating/air conditioning unit and fireplace/chimney.

5. Vacuum/brush out your clothes dryer vent and ducts to prevent lint buildups that can cause fires.

6. Vacuum dust from refrigerator condenser coils so that it will run more efficiently and use less energy.

7. Reverse ceiling fan direction so that blades spin counterclockwise. This pushes air down and creates a cooling effect during the warmer months of the year.

8. Do those deep cleaning tasks around the house that are not part of your regular routine: move larger furniture to vacuum underneath; empty out the refrigerator and freezer and wipe down all interior surfaces; clean the inside of the oven and microwave.
