Four Ways to Keep a Tidy Home When Life Gets Crazy

We all have times when our schedule gets hectic and tasks like housework and tidying get pushed aside. There are some easy ways you can keep your home from turning into a disaster even when you don’t have a lot of time to spare. Here are a few ideas to keep your space neat even when life gets crazy.

1. Take something with you – Every time you leave a room grab something that belongs elsewhere and put it away. Getting up to grab a snack? Take those coffee mugs that have been sitting out since breakfast. Going to the bedroom to change clothes? Take the empty laundry basket with you. This is a small action but when done repeatedly it can make a big difference in how neat your space is.

2. Spend 15 minutes – Taking just 15 minutes out of your day to tidy up or do a quick surface clean can help you feel a lot more in control of your home. Grab a basket or tote bag, pick up all the items that have been left out, and put them away. Or use those 15 minutes to give the kitchen or bathroom a fast wipe down. Set a timer and challenge yourself to see how much you can get done!

3. Do that one thing – Is there one area of your home that is always messy? Maybe it’s the kitchen counter where dishes collect, or that chair in your bedroom where clothes get tossed, or the table where mail piles up. Resolve to address that place in your home every day: do the dishes, hang up the clothes, or sort the mail. Spending just a few minutes a day will keep that area from becoming a big project that you don’t have time for.

4. Give transition items a home – A lot of clutter is made up of things that are in transition. Some examples are the bags we take to work or school, donation or return items, or things that were brought downstairs but need to be returned to an upstairs room. Instead of letting these things sit out, assign them a place. Simply adding a basket or pretty container in that place where things collect provides a landing spot for them and helps to conceal the clutter.
